Hotel & Bar
The Crown Hotel overlooks the Market Place in the very heart of Glastonbury. Built as a coaching inn in the 18th century, it underwent a refurbishment in 2020 and now offers eight stylish and unique ensuite bedrooms, a large bar/restaurant on the ground floor, an intimate second bar upstairs and pavement seating in front of the building.
The Crown’s central location allows guests to enjoy Glastonbury’s many quirky cafés, shops and ‘impromptu occurrences’ whenever and however the mood takes them. All of the event spaces used for the town’s many conferences and cultural events are just a couple of minutes walk away: ideal for popping back to one’s hotel room for a rest or a change of clothes.
Visitors to Glastonbury usually want to visit the town’s famous Tor. Car parking near the National Trust access points is extremely difficult, but the main gate at the foot of the Tor is just 0.7 miles away from The Crown.
Glastonbury offers an extraordinary blend of history, myth and present-day vibrancy. In the Middle Ages, its rich and powerful Abbey caused it to be one of the most important towns in England. Now preserved as a spectacular ruin, the Abbey is located just across the road from The Crown. Other sites dating back to early Christianity are dotted around the town. St John’s churchyard is the location of the famous Glastonbury Thorn tree; every Christmas the oldest pupil of the adjoining school cuts a sprig of blossom from it and this is sent to the King to decorate his dining table.
Glastonbury is also an important place for Pagans, many of whom place great importance on its landscape and consider the Tor to be the location of the legendary island of Avalon. The Tor ceased to be an island when the Somerset Levels were drained, but on misty mornings the low-lying surrounding land disappears completely… Rising above a sea of mist that extends out to distant hills, the Tor becomes an island once more. Well worth setting an early alarm clock for!
